Windows 8 has Finally Arrived in the Philippines: The Windows 8 Launch Highlights

On the 30th of October, 2012, an exclusive event was hosted by Microsoft Philippines to the people of the press, employees and executives from different partner companies of Microsoft in the country at the Genting Club, in Resorts World Manila. They gathered to this special day for the most awaited Windows 8 Launch in the Philippines.

Indeed, October 2012 is marked as the big bang for Microsoft. This is because, this is the month that they will launch the Windows 8 operating system and other Microsoft products to the rest of the world. In Youtube, if you have visited the official channel of Windows, you will see recently uploaded videos concerning different launches of Windows 8 in different parts of the globe. China had it during the 23th, Germany and Brazil had it during the 25th (according to their respective Time Zones) and more than 10 countries had it too. Windows 8 has been officially launched globally on the 26th and last October 30, 2012, the Philippines just concluded it.

The event was preceded by an introduction from the Managing Director of Microsoft Philippines, Ms. Karrie Capellan-Ilagan where she elaborated that today marks the launching of a wide variety of products that will respond to the needs of today’s brave new world where the lines between work and play have all but disappeared. Indeed, Windows 8 is the most tested, reviewed and ready operating system in Microsoft’s history. Windows 8 is a platform that can seamlessly and effectively bridge the gap between PCs, laptops, tablets and mobile phones, creating a no compromise experience for all.

In behalf of Microsoft Philippines, Ms. Karrie Capellan-Ilagan is happy to announce that there are over 31 devices are available already in local retail stores nationwide from the partners of Microsoft-Asus, Acer, Dell, HP, Lenovo, Samsung, Sony, and Toshiba. Microsoft Philippines also tied up with different leading organizations and businesses in the country to develop their local apps for Windows 8.

As of now, we have the following local apps in the marketplace: ABSCBN News, Food Magazine,, SM Cinemas, MyMakati, BPI, Globe, Smart, Meralco LBC, Cebu Pacific, MMDA and Resorts World Manila.

Different celebrity ambassadors of Windows 8 also made their part and share their best experiences with Windows 8 along with the hosts KC Montero and Miss Mae Rivera-Moreno, the Windows Client Business Lead. We have Ms. Karen Pamintuan, for Fashion. She talked about how Windows 8 can be used in creativity through the paint app which is as precise as a real oil pastel used in real painting.

We also have Coach Jim Saret of the Biggest Loser, Pinoy Edition who talked about Fitness with Windows 8 and demoed the BallStrike App for Windows 8, which is an augmented reality app aims to lose calories while popping balls in motion.

And then, we have Miss Daphne who talked about the People Hub, which is a great way to make your connection close to the people you are with. The People Hub integrates all the social networking sites a contact person has and as the user, you have the ability to reply either through email, sms, or to his or her other social networking sites. It also lets you pin the closest people to the start screen of your Windows 8, so that you can be connected 24/7.

Miss Daphne also tackled about the lifestyle features of the Windows 8, in relation to the Windows Phone 8, with Mr. Jerry Bongco, the Windows Phone Lead for Microsoft Philippines. Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8 has the same framework, therefore you can use Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 in connection to one another, such as real time editing from either of the devices.

They have also discussed the safety feature for Kids in Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8, with the new IE10,which is faster and fluid. The New IE has the capability to block websites which appear not suitable to them. Another feature which relates to parenthood with Windows Phone 8 is the Kid’s Corner where the parents or the one who owns Windows Phone 8 can select the apps and multimedia files which can only be played by their child. Swiping to the right from the Lock Screen brings you to the Kid’s Corner.

The Asian Sensation Christian Bautista and Mr. Lopez talks about their favorite apps such as the Music, Photos, and the Food Magazine App as well as the Windows 8 to go, respectively.

Makati City Mayor JunJun Binay also had the opportunity to release a statement to everyone concerning their partnership for the MyMakati app for Windows 8. The app features information for the whole Makati City, making it much more convenient for residents and visitors to navigate throughout and enjoy the city.

The Launch Featured different laptops running in Windows 8 from Microsoft’s partners. And the people who witnessed the event get to be up close with the Nokia Lumias 820 and 920, the new smartphones running in Windows Phone 8, which is considered to be one of the most anticipated mobile operating systems in the market.

In line with the event, Microsoft have formally introduced the Microsoft Student Core U-Crew Members which are the chosen students by Microsoft Philippines and they will be the ambassadors of the latest technologies of Microsoft to the different colleges and universities in the Philippines and they will be part of the different college activation for the next four months.

Windows 8 will be available in two versions at retail, Windows 8 and Windows 8 Pro.
